URINARY INCONTINENCE

Myth or Fact?

It is normal to have leakage when we are pregnant, after a baby, or as we get older.

Myth!

It is common to experience leakage, but it is not normal. It is treatable, and you do not have to live with it! There are different types of incontinence, and some of us can have a mix of both

Stress Incontinence: this is the leakage of urine that occurs whe we cough, sneeze or laugh; lift, run, or jump. It is caused from increased intra-abdominal pressure and a pelvic floor that’s not quite up to the task of holding up all this pressure.

Urge Incontinence: this is the leakage that occurs when there is a strong, uncontrollable need to pee with an inability to make it to the toilet on time. This can occur due to the overactivity of the bladder, as well as from too much tightness in the pelvic floor Sometimes, we don’t actually leak, we just feel the really intense urge to go that causes us to go to the bathroom more often than we should. We call this urgency/frequency.

The highly-trained Physiotherapists at Willow Health Centre are specialized in helping to diagnose the cause of your leakage. It might be a weak pelvic floor, or it could be a pelvic floor that is too tight and cannot do its job properly. Maybe the pelvic floor is stuck on old scar tissue, or the abdominal muscles have separated. Whatever the cause, we can help you do the right exercises for you. It is not always as simple as ‘do a kegel’ – but we can show you how your pelvic floor is designed to work with your core muscles so you can cough and sneeze while doing a jumping jack, or go out on the town for hours and never worry about where the next bathroom is. Never have to use a pad again! Book your appointment today!
