Pelvic floor muscles work alongside other key muscles to enable proper support of the lower back, pelvis, bladder and bowel. The muscles of the pelvic floor play a key role in core stability, breathing and posture, as well as the support of the pelvic organs.

At Willow Health, we specialize in Pelvic Health Physiotherapy to treat pelvic health disorders such as incontinence, prolapse and pelvic pain in both men and women. When pelvic floor muscles are weak, or hypotonic, this can lead to supportive disorders such as incontinence and prolapse. When the pelvic floor muscles are shortened, tight, or hypertonic, this can lead to significant and persistent pelvic pain, frequent or urgent voiding, or constipation and retention issues.

Pelvic Floor weakness is common, not normal

A weakened pelvic floor can be the result of pregnancy or childbirth, injury to the pelvic region or spinal cord, neurologic disease, infection or degenerative changes associated with aging.

Although up to 50% of childbearing women experience symptoms of a weakened pelvic floor, less than 10% seek treatment because they believe that as they age, it is normal to experience incontinence and other symptoms. These symptoms are common, but NOT normal, and they can be effectively treated with conservative measures such as pelvic floor physiotherapy.

Why are strong Pelvic Floor Muscles important?

Pelvic Floor Muscles form the ‘bowl’ or ‘hammock’ that holds up all our abdominal organs. They have many important roles:

  • Sphincteric – They assist in the closure of the urethra and anal canal for the prevention of incontinence
  • Supportive – They ‘hold up’ the bladder, rectum, and uterus to help prevent prolapse
  • Sexual – They assist in the erection of the clitoris/penis and assist in achieving orgasm
  • Stabilizers – They are part of the ‘core muscles’ that help increase low back and pelvic stability

Willow Health helps you strengthen your pelvic floor through a customized program. Although many people have heard of Kegel exercises, more than half are not able to contract the right muscles. Our exercise program will ensure you are targeting the proper muscle groups. You will learn to control pelvic floor muscles while sitting, standing and lying down.  You will also learn to fully relax the muscles, which is crucial for clients with pelvic pain.
